Class Updates - Summer Session Begins June 10/11

Greetings Middle Eastern Dance Fans!
I’m here at the airport en route to Cairo – Oh my!

Yes, I’m continuing study as I have been for most of April & May. Stay tuned – Princess Farhana and I are traveling together. No, we’re not going for a festival, we’re just going to be hanging out with our friends absorbing culture and taking private lessons. Yeah!
So to showcase all this newfound info, our June/July class schedules will change slightly:

Tuesdays 6:30pm – Foundations in Egyptian Dance – Focusing on specifically Egyptian stylings, we will consider some of the more common movement textures with an eye on proper muscle control, foundations and expression using modulations.

Tuesdays 7:45pm – “What I learned on my Summer Break” – A hands on expression of the material I’ve been getting, from characteristic stylings of Egyptian dancers, to cultural information and much much more. Unlock the world of authentic Raqs Sharqi!

Wednesdays 7:15pm for a TWO Hour Class – “Improvisational Techniques in Egyptian Dance” – From movement textures, to modulations through music theory, rhythm knowledge and unlocking that improvisational experiential spark that MAKES this dance what it is. No choreography, no telling you what to do, but how to express the music in Egyptian style! This is unlike any other class you’ve ever had – and enjoy the benefits of having a musician AND a dancer train you to find the spirit of the dance!

For class information, pricing and schedule, visit www.JimBozSchoolOfDance.com

Got a question? I’ll be out of the country!
I probably won’t have net access because I’m not taking the laptop, but visit www.JimBoz.com for the latest info!

Oreet has always been fascinated by the body and how it moves. Her family's Middle Eastern cultural roots exposed her to an array of ethnic sounds and rhythms, including traditional belly dance melodies. This inspired her to learn all she could about dance and movement, everything from gymnastics to ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and folkloric dance. Oreet became passionately committed to understanding the ins and outs of each genre and its impact on the body.

Oreet received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Performance from SUNY College at Brockport, and later settled in New York City to perform with several modern dance companies. Simultaneously, she choreographed works of movement for emerging dance and theater companies and brought her professional dance expertise to fitness clubs around New York City. Excited by the health club trend of offering dance classes as a form of exercise, Oreet was eager to learn, become certified in, and teach all forms of bodywork. Her certifications with AFFA, Johnny G Spinning and Back Logic allowed her to teach hi/low-impact aerobics, step, body sculpting, spin, kickboxing and stretch classes at several popular fitness clubs.

By 1996, Oreet found herself increasingly frustrated. Something was missing from the "trendy" Oreet often overheard women who were seemingly committed to their dance classes and workouts complaining about their "problem areas" or poor body image. Like her students, Oreet was also working hard physically yet struggled with an unsatisfied sense of wellbeing. Motivated to reach all types of women, Oreet began experimenting with the workouts workouts and dance techniques she was being asked to teach. she offered.

Years of trial and error and ongoing feedback from her students and clients helped Oreet form her new technique. Returning to her roots, Oreet blended together the body-loving art form of belly dance, with the cardiovascular and toning benefits of fitness classes. SharQui - The bellydance workout™, was born.

After teaching SharQui in Manhattan and across the U.S. for almost ten years, Oreet has developed a following of students. The SharQui technique works on core strength, speed, isolation, stamina and, most importantly, focuses on positive self-image in a judgement-free environment. SharQui - The bellydance workout™, is perfect for those seeking a new and exciting way to get fit and for the serious dancer looking to stay healthy and dance smarter.

Oreet continues to expose women to SharQui's philosophy and methods. She currently teaches master classes and just developed her new workout, Belly Blast by SharQui™ where weighted belts are implemented for an advanced SharQui workout. Oreet also teaches the SharQui method as ACE and AFFA continuing education credits and is a regular presenter at the Sara City Workout Fitness Conventions, ECA and other health and wellness expos throughout the country.

SharQui-The bellydance workout™ DVD is available through Amazon.com.

Multi Award Winning Zaina Hart is a charismatic performer whose trademark is her mesmerizing arm and hand movement and unique body styling. Zaina is a performer/choreographer who is also known for her precise hip articulation and fiery performances who has been performing Middle Eastern Dance for nearly 30 years. She currently resides in Vancouver, WA, where she maintains Zaina's House of Dance, (a Middle Eastern Dance Studio) and produces the Double Crown Belly Dance Competition™, Festival and International Bazaar * held annually the last weekend of September. Over the past 29 years, Zaina has had the opportunity to study with many of the "Master Performers and Musicians" of the Industry (see below) and has become a Master Teacher/Performer in her own right.

Zaina's style is "Basic Egyptian", however, she adds to this her own extraordinary flair - her personality, which depending on performance and music is a powerful mixture of elegance, playfulness, humor, and sensual. Zaina has the reputation of being able to interpret La Danse Orientale through nontraditional music and characters and as well has developed quite the reputation as Comedian and Emcee.

As Director of The Bedouin Babes she and her dance partner Aiyanna were honored to receive a first place title in the "Wiggles and Giggles" Category of Reno's very own Wiggles of the West Competition in a spoof on larger than life derrières. Two years later Zaina brought "Banana" to Reno's Wiggles of the West Competition and again received the "Wiggles and Giggles" first place title.

Zaina's current Troupe/s "Z-Ladies" and "Z-Girls" will be hitting the circuit in late 2005 with new choreographies, new performers and and lots of "Zzzzzzzip".

Zaina is the Owner and Editor in Chief of the newest and most exciting dancer's publication, The "Belly Dancer" Magazine. She is also the past Secretary of MED&CA (Middle Eastern Dance and Culture Association) and is still involved in Reptile rescue and preservation, having participated as a Board member of "Reptile World Zoo" which had been developed to provide hands-on education, scientific research, observation, a pure breeding environment, expert advice and care instructions about reptiles. She has also served as a Staff Writer for various Middle Eastern Dance publications (Wiggle Hips and Jareeda) with articles translated and reprinted in various European publications.

Zaina in PurpleZaina believes that what makes this dance so unique and beautiful is the differences in styles, age, gender, race, body form and passions of its performers. There is truly a place for everyone in this dance. Remembering that dance is an expression of life, and Middle Eastern Dance is the oldest form of dance documented, there is little doubt that the experience of this dance will be a positive, joyous one.

Because of her unique teaching and performing style, Oregon Public Broadcasting approached her in 1999 to assist in the making of as well as be featured in a Documentary about Middle Eastern Dance and its effect on the lives of the women and men who have chosen the art form for their creative outlet. The Documentary was shortened to an "Art Beat" segment which to date has aired on three separate occasions and received the most votes for re-airing in the summer of 2003.

INFLUENCES/INSTRUCTORS: There have been many wonderful instructors along the way. Zaina's style has specifically been influenced by the teachings of Masters such as; Jamilla and Fatima Al Wahid, Suzanna Del Vecchio, Mahmoud Reda, Ibrahim "Bobby" Farrah, Bert Balladine, Dalia Carella, Horacio Cifuentes, Morocco, Jodette, and many more. Her coach and long time instructor Halima, has helped hone her skills and bring Zaina to an awareness of "her own dance persona". As well, Zaina began studying film of who she believed were the "greats" of Orientale - Egyptian - Cabaret style dance in the early 80's. The greatest of these influences have been Naima Akef and Sohair Zaki and currently "Dina".

From Zaina: Instruction is a never ending process. I will take classes/lessons as long as I perform because it continues to challenge me dance skill, push me in different directions, and moves me "OUTSIDE THE BOX".
Zaina's Awards & Titles

It was so great to hang with you again this weekend! It had been WAY too long. I will carry your Lene Lovich/Nena Hagen story with me forever and laugh to myself; it'll be our snowball joke. And we got so busy in the workshop learning that awesome choreography that we didn't even have time to practice position eleven!
If I meet you guys in Florida, we have to make time for it. Required. Period. ; )
It goes without saying that your workshop was awesome, your performance incredible, and your company hi-freakin'-larious as usual. I miss ya already! Thank you for teaching us here in Houston. I know we all had an unforgettable time and can't WAIT for next year. Mwah!

Jim Boz Workshops & Show - Santa Clara, CA December 10th

Sunday December 10th I will be teaching and performing in the Santa Clara (south of San Francisco) area of California

Come on down and check out two workshops I'm very proud to present:
1 - Dynamic Drills and Techniques: From sassy, we'll break down a few combinations into edible chunks, beginning with drills and exercises to achieve the proper presentation, through concept, energy flow, weight transitions, arm frames and all the delicious things that make the Middle Eastern dance geeks drool! I have not only concepts to share like texture sequencing and morphing, but a very different way of breaking down the steps to learning how to learn sequences of movements. I've heard some great feedback, and I'd love to hear yours -- come on down to check out the workshop. Although this class is suitable to all levels, I've found that beginning students find themselves able to grasp complex concepts, and advanced students and pros have been able to find that extra little twist intheir foundations that helps them excel in a new direction. I'm very proud of this material. I recently taught it on the East Coast to rave reviews.

2 - Shimmy Layers/Drum Solo & Accents/ Master Class: Oh, let me challenge you! I have such a different way of teaching choreographies. I really hope to inspire teachers to teach in a similar method, because although it takes alot of work to set up, you'll be amazed at how fast your students can grasp concepts of motion, energy, technique and expression! Add into it some of my signature concepts of foundation technique (TikTokBlehEenh!) and shimmy layers and we'll put together a more complex presentation of my latest drum solo choreography. It's most delicious!

My signature teaching style is designed to assist dancers move from 'doing moves' to moving and interpreting the music, defining textures that are organic rather than pure mechanics. It's the smoulder....the passion...Yum!

And then, I get to perform at a restaurant!
Those of you who know my performances know my big stage work. I'll admit, I love working restaurants. The intimate environment allows a fun presentation of the dance. I'm *really* looking forward to this show and getting to entertain. Ask the people who used to go to the restaurants I performed at in my...um....30's. :)

Gala show includes Alexandria, Tatseen, Una and more!

Workshop prices:
#1- Technique -
10am-12pm
$35advance/$40 door

After having a conversation with Jim about applying glitter at Rakkasah (K-Y in the checkout line is always embarassing)....and after test driving this stuff under EVERY situation for 6 months (seriously..sauna, hot tub, misting...life was rough, I tell you), I actually bought part of the company.

Eye Kandy glitter applies, not with the she-laq/hairspray/personal products that we are used to, but with a clear adhesive that is non-allergenic and has no formaldehyde, silicon, or latex. The glitter comes in 48 standard colors and we can do custom blends if you have a special event, and once it's on, it stays all day. Doesn't run, doesn't budge, stayed on during my motorcycle rides without getting in my eyes.

See http://tribes.tribe.net/eyekandyglitter, or to go www.eyekandyglitter.com. I'd also LOVE to hear about colors you'd like to see in the future for I am preparing to release a new line in the spring JUST for bellydancers!

Meet'n'Greet Party - Saturday Dance workshops - Saturday *Belly*Jam* with vendors, open dancing, performances and MORE!

BellyDanceSanDiego.com and SDBellyJam.com feature two exciting workshops with Christina from Blue Lotus (Chicago).

Details available soon at www.SDBellyJam.com and www.BellyDanceSanDiego.com.
Some vendor space and performance space available.

More info about Christina and Blue Lotus Tribe: www.BlueLotusTribe.org

Christina's Bio:
Christina was seven years old when her mom first signed her up for ballet classes. Although she did not stay with formal dance training, she has been in motion ever since, picking up informal training in many different forms of dance throughout her life.

During college Christina and housemate Seana discovered Middle-Eastern folkloric dance though a demonstration by Madison Wisconsin's Tahjah and were instantly fascinated. After graduation in 1992, they began studying folkloric style under Tahjah and within a year were performing with the Jaravellir Middle-Eastern Dancers, a troupe in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Eventually, Christina became a teacher, and choreographer for the troupe. Shortly thereafter, she began to travel all over the midwest to teach and perform, earning recognition from both her students and her fellow dancers.

In 1994, Christina became a member of the Tribe Theatre Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (currently the Midwest Rock Opera Company). She began as a dancer and chorus member for the company, but was soon a principal actress, and, bringing her Middle-Eastern dance influence along, an assistant choreographer. After moving to Chicago, Christina began teaching a small folkloric troupe of her own within the SCA and studying Egyptian style bellydance under Jasmin Jahal in 1996. In Jasmin she found inspiration and a renewed love of the dance. She continued to study with Jasmin in the years ahead.

In 1999, Christina and her friend Wendy became curious about Tribal bellydance style and began to study with Stephanie Barto to learn more. She loved the energy and community of tribal dance and the improvisational, natural style suited her taste. Within a few months, she was performing with Stephanie's student troupe The Fringe Connection and was an occasional guest with Read My Hips at numerous venues across the Chicagoland area.

On a summer night in 2001, Christina became one of the founding members of the Blue Lotus Tribe, a troupe dedicated to the evolution of the tribal style. Her energetic, inviting dance style comes from her love of performing and connecting with an audience. "I feel that dancing is the purest celebration of the woman as an extension of the earth and its creative capacity. I am never more free or more joyful than when I am dancing." Within the tribe, Christina welcomes the challenge of developing tribal dance and expanding the troupe's repertoire.

Outside of the tribe, Christina continues to study with Jasmin Jahal and was invited to perform in her August 2002 production of "Kismet, One Man's Destiny." She currently teaches both Egyptian and tribal style dance and performs throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest

Here's the big questions:
- same colors? (yellow gold on olive green)
- boy beater tanks? Or a variety? (spaghettis, baby dolls, etc)
- Something on the back? Where do you want me to emblazon my contact info...Hey, it's still advertising. ;)

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT JIM BOZ
From the Utah Belly Dance Yahoo List – June 2006

Was he "fabulous" or what? I so wish I could have taken the Sunday workshop as well, unfortunately I had to get back to Moab. Jim Boz makes me want to move to San Diego!! I loved, loved, loved it. I am sore today though! hehehe That is a GOOD thing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, Jim Boz is amazing and a good instructor and lots of fun. Thanks to Thia for bringing such high quality instructors to Utah, we have such a great community here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Holy Mother of all things happy!!! Jim Boz is amazing! The workshop Saturday was fun, and extremly informative. I was very impressed with the written instruction, the one on one feed back, the intense study of technique, and the new, yes new, moves and combinations! It was great for those of us who have been doing this a while to have a fresh take on traditional moves that can be used in all styles of belly dance. He made it very easy to move from Egyptian to tribal styles with his choreography and demonstrated the ways in which to do just that. And.....he is extremely funny! Thanks again to Thia, for always being a standard in our community, for bringing in great teachers, for putting on great shows, and for just being Thia. We are all grateful! I hope to see more of the great dancers in our community today, (Sunday), his technique is something I think we can all learn from. And it is just fun! Hope to see you all there!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, FABULOUS is more like it!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, I agree that Jim Boz was completely FABULOUS!!! ;)

The Jim Boz show was in a beautiful location with a prodigious variety of dance styles. Thia did an excellent job putting it together. Jim was really fun to watch. His solo showed a level of grace and skill that is truely awesome.

His instruction was very concise and I was amazed in the improvement I saw in myself after only two days of working with him. He's also highly entertaining as well as having a wealth of experience and education. His commitment to personal feedback in a workshop
setting was extremely useful. He had superb written materials and a novel and thorough approach to choreography absorption.

Amazing doesn't seem to be a strong enough description of Jim Boz and the workshops this weekend, but since I can't think of any that would be better so I have to agree.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jim Boz was so freakin' amazing...and I'm still sore! I'm going to have to work on my stamina because next time Jim Boz comes to UT, I am so going to both workshops!
Rakkasah West 2006
FYI - If you are considering attending the weeklong workshops at Rakkasah West this year, this information may influence your decision (to go or not even! LOL)
Jim Boz is teaching at Rakkasah West.
I'm not sure of the exact schedule, but I believe my workshops are as follows:
Sunday March 19 - From Drills to Drum Solo - 3hrs
Tuesday March 21 - Performance Technique - 1.5hrs
Wednesday March 22 - Travelling Steps and Finger Cymbal Combinations (aka "Not Your Mama's Finger Cymbal Patterns") - 3hrs
Is that delicious or what?
There WILL be the caravan contingent from San Diego this year, keep posted here for info. I'll be there all week, of course, but consider coming at least for the weekend.
The Bad Girls of Belly Dance party is worth the price of admission at least!
And yes, the troupe will be there. Which is why we're having AUDITIONS next week! ;) We are trying for both troupes on the stage!
So if you're planning to go for the weeklong, get your payments in as soon as possible for the discount rates!
www.Rakkasah.com
Rakkasah East? Yeah, I'm performing Sunday about 3:24pm. In between Dalia Carella and her Dance Collective and Suzanna Del Vecchio. I was joking with Dalia that they were my opening act...sort of like BiBi did at DDF! (I was their opening act!)
SANDSTORM Auditions - October 12th
October 12th, our Professional troupe will be holding Open Auditions in preparation for the spring season.
Our spring performances include Rakkasah West.
Oh, you know the party that we have at Rakkasah and you KNOW you want to be a part of it. Of course, with the 'play hard' comes the 'work hard'. Prospective applicants will be serious about their dance, and interested in taking the next step with a professional troupe. We focus on larger stage events and theaters. Regular rehearsals, workshops and classes are required.
In addition to troupe work, each member is encouraged and trained to maintain solo repertoires. We work together using peer guidance to raise the bar in our own dance, in our group work and our dance community.
"Can you handle this?"
Msg us here, or call 1-877-682-5873.
Jim Boz - Last Minute in Orlando, FL
Previously Scheduled workshop instructor can't make it...so who do they call?
ME! :)
MAY 20-21-22, 2005
ORLANDO, FLORIDA
So get this:
Two Shows
4 Workshops
Orlando, FL at the Holiday Inn Universal (Right across from universal Studios)
how much? I dunno... I think they extended the early bird registration due to the late change in instructors, but you can visit www.BaladiBoutique.com and look for the Festival on the Nile XXIX info.
Oh...and don't get confused: I'm teaching there for XXX (that's 30th...not the 'other thing'...heh heh) in October. That show will be awesome too...and completely different workshop topics. PLUS...in October, I'm bringing the whole troupe for the debut of a ROCKIN new theater show!
So, for May I'm still working on what I'll teach, but Turkish Romany was requested. Any other suggestions from anyone considering going?
Things possibly on tap:
Drills, Thrills & Chills
Performance Concepts (Tips & Tricks) (includes 'what to do when your brain turns off')
Veil Technique
Drum Solo Choreography (currently only an Intermediate/Advanced one)
Moving Combos with Finger Cymbals
Morphing Combos
Turkish Gypsy (of course)
Pop Choreography
[insert adjective here] Combos
For October I'm teaching (subject to change, of course):
Raks Technique 1
We've got a few items, more to come soon.
Check it out.
All profits go to the Dance Co. to bring them to YOUR town! :)
...to Sassy & Bambi on their performances at Kolbeh's this weekend. (Of course I'm sure Jim's weekend went well too but I can only be on one coast at a time. ;) )
Got one photo of Bambi that was slightly recognizable but the others of her and Sassy came out way too blurry to post. We had a decent-sized group take up half of the restaurant and be 'the obnoxious yet fabulously demure' party.
Yay! :) Congrats!
Hello!
I have some questions about the beginners classes starting this week:
What time on Tuesday night?
What's the address?
What to wear? :)
Sinclair can't make this first Tuesday, but can make the other 5 classes in the series... can she go a different day this week to another beginners class if there is one? (just curious)
See you tomorrow! Yay!
So awhile back, I mentioned seeing a bellydancer mini photo shoot* whilst out walking on the Boardwalk. Then I'm surfing everyone's albums, and how funny - it was Kat** :) Super fabulous. Also, I'd like to formally state that the girls in troupe (both troupes!) rock, and aren't too bad to look at, either. Yay for everyone!
Hi Jim,
My name is Hilary, I'm in Australia and perform and teach FCBD tribal bellydance. I was directed to your tribe with a question, hope you can help me out.
I've two new male students in my beginners class and the poor loves are very stiff especially in the hips. So while I'm cool about the stretching and teaching them hip movements and basic ATS movements, posture etc can you give advice if there are adjustments needed do things like arm movements? I'm casting my mind back to my ballet days and the differences in movements, have been watching what male flamenco dancers do especially with hands and arms and have been watching the featured boys on the Urban Ghawazee dvd.
So far I've decided to tone down hand floreous because it's too feminine and it's been suggested they keep their fingers together (not unlike ballet too). But I'm just thinking that men naturally will exceute moves differentlly than women anyway so I'm not really too concerned about them looking like they are imitating female movements, especilly with the strong posture and tone of ATS movements.
But I wanted to check with the experience of you have, does anything come to mind that maybe I should be aware of? Perhaps not dancing on toes? I dunno. I just don't want to look like I have no idea!
BTW, Costuming is not an issue.
Thanks heaps in advance,
Hilary
From our Jan 2005 performance at the Cubberly Theater in Palo Alto, CA:
"San Diego's own Jim Boz Dance Company took the stage next. Jim Boz, the only male belly dancer in the night's line up, is a charismatic and talented performer. His all-girl troupe came on first, slinking around the stage in gorgeous bedleh. Each dancer would stop and pose, then slink some more; although a simple slow piece, they were awe-inspiring with their beauty and womanly confidence. Jim Boz took the stage to thunderous applause and showed off the electric artistry he is so well known for. Jim has a hulking presence - over 6 feet tall and muscular, yet he is quite graceful His sharp hips and undulations were exciting. Jim demonstrated his well-toned glutes by squeezing them, one at a time, to the eat of the music, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. The Jim Boz Dance Company is a joy to watch, over and over again."
In the Palo Alto Weekly.
Okay, Princess Farhana has the cover...of course, she's the STAR!...but check out the big pic of me on page 7!
http://paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morguepdf/2004/2004_12_31.paw.section1.pdf
The scary thing is that at this show, in the audience will be:
- My roommate from College in SoCal from back when I was a Physics major in the 80's who recently tracked me down online
- My longest time friend that I've been in touch with and just about best buds for over 20 years
- A contingent of friends I've known for a LONG time
- The big old biker who is the Lord of my household in SCA who is responsible for getting me INTO this stuff so very long ago
- My TROUPE! (Ack! They get to meet all these people!)
Be sure to make sure my medication has kicked in if you see me at the show all spacey. Truly.
Or better yet: come out and party with us and buy me a cocktail! ;)
The NEW Jim Boz Dance Co. TShirts will be in our grubby little paws Friday Sept 17 just in time for us to ship out to Desert Dance Festival in San Jose, CA!
We posted the logo as our Tribe main photo...fun, eh? They will be printed in a yellow gold color on olive/army green 'boy beater' ribbed tank tops. For the guys, we will have some regular tshirts in the same color combination.
Most fun!
This is a very limited run, so get them by finding us at DDF, or come by the studio in San Diego (3927 Utah St (just off University) Mon, Tue or Wed evenings). Oh heck, we might even mail one to you if you ask real nice.
Don't forget to see our performance Sunday at 2:18pm at the Civic Auditorium for DDF. For more DDF Info, visit www.DesertDance.com!
(Logo design by Jim, Logo selection (from a host of possibilities) was a group effort. Blame Sassy for the shirt color & style. Bambi is designing the next one, hopefully for the MECDA-CV event in November!)
